Hydration in Dubai's Heat: A Practical Guide for Runners
7 min read
Sweat rate in Dubai's summer commonly hits 1.5–2L per hour for trained endurance athletes. Replacing only water — especially without sodium — can cause hyponatremia, which presents identically to dehydration but is treated very differently.
Calculate Your Sweat Rate
- Weigh yourself nude before a run
- Run for 60 minutes, recording any fluid consumed
- Weigh yourself nude after
- Sweat rate = weight lost (kg) + fluid consumed (L) per hour
Most runners are surprised — sweat rates of 1.2–2.0 L/hr are normal in Dubai's heat for moderate-effort running.
What to Replace
- Sodium — primary electrolyte lost in sweat. 400–1200 mg per liter of fluid is the typical replacement range.
- Potassium — lost in smaller quantities. Often included in commercial mixes but rarely the limiting factor.
- Magnesium and calcium — helpful for cramping protocols but not acute hydration.
- Carbohydrates — for runs over 75 minutes, 30–60g per hour improves performance and protects pacing.
Practical Hydration Strategy
- Pre-run — 500ml fluid with electrolytes, 30 minutes before
- During (under 75 min) — 150–250ml every 15–20 minutes with electrolytes
- During (over 75 min) — same fluid plus 30g carbs per hour
- Post-run — replace 150% of weight lost within 4 hours, with sodium
Products That Work
- LMNT — high-sodium (1000mg), no sugar — pure electrolytes
- Tailwind — carbs and electrolytes combined, easy on the gut
- DIY mix — 500ml water + 1/4 tsp salt + 1 tbsp maple syrup. Works fine, costs almost nothing.
Warning Signs
- Cramping that won't release — likely sodium, not magnesium
- Sloshing stomach — drinking too much, too fast, without electrolytes
- Headache during or after — possible hyponatremia, especially if you only drank water
Dubai's heat doesn't forgive. Get your individual numbers, build a protocol around them, and stop guessing.
