Recovery Tools: Theragun, Compression, Sauna — What Works
8 min read
Recovery is when adaptation happens. Tools that genuinely accelerate it are worth the investment; tools that don't are an expensive form of self-soothing.
Tier 1 — Strong Evidence, Worth Owning
Foam Roller (~AED 80–200)
The evidence — improves range of motion, reduces perceived soreness, no measurable performance harm. The cheapest, most universally useful recovery tool ever made.
Compression Garments (~AED 300–600)
The evidence — measurable reduction in DOMS, especially when worn during travel and overnight after long runs. The strongest data is for socks during flights — drastically reduces swelling.
Sauna Access (~AED 200–500/month gym membership)
The evidence — repeated heat exposure produces plasma volume expansion, improved heat tolerance (matters in Dubai), and increased growth hormone. 20 minutes at 80°C, 4x/week is the protocol with the most data behind it.
Tier 2 — Moderate Evidence, Worth It If Affordable
Theragun / Percussive Massagers (~AED 800–2500)
The evidence — comparable to foam rolling for soreness reduction, faster and more targeted. Not better, just more convenient. Worth it if you'll actually use it daily; otherwise the foam roller does the same job for 10% of the price.
Cold Plunge (~AED 100/session or AED 3000+ home setup)
The evidence — strong for soreness, mood, inflammation. Don't combine within 4 hours of strength training if hypertrophy is a goal.
Pneumatic Compression Boots (Normatec, ~AED 4000+)
The evidence — moderate for DOMS reduction, anecdotal for next-day freshness. Premium price point hard to justify unless you're racing weekly.
Tier 3 — Weak or No Evidence
Cupping (~AED 200/session)
The evidence — placebo dominant. The visible bruises are not a sign of healing.
Cryotherapy Chambers (~AED 150/session)
The evidence — comparable to cold plunge but with worse experience and higher cost. Marketing > science.
CBD Recovery Products (~AED 300+ per bottle)
The evidence — minimal for performance recovery. Sleep effects are inconsistent and below the placebo threshold in most controlled trials.
Vibrating Plates / Whole-Body Vibration (Free at gyms)
The evidence — close to zero. Skip.
What Actually Drives Recovery (Free)
- Sleep — 8+ hours, consistent timing
- Nutrition — adequate calories, 1.6–2g protein per kg bodyweight, carb refueling
- Easy days actually easy — Zone 1, not Zone 3
- Stress management — mental load and physical recovery share a budget
The AED 100 you spend on a foam roller and a sauna pass will outperform the AED 5000 you spend on the rest combined.
